Post-NaNo Update: Seeds of Blood first draft edits

I’m about 1/4 of the way through the first round of edits on the rough draft of Seeds of Blood. I’ve found things that need to get shifted around, a red herring or two that needs to get thrown in, and I’m sketching a few more supernatural encounters for our poor heroes to run into before things go really berserk.

…Authors are Evil. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

One of the tricky parts is that some of the bad guys are kind of Out of Context Villains. There’s a logical, plot-important reason for that. But it means I have to walk a fine line between providing clues that our heroes can finally pick up on, and giving things away too soon.

It does help that certain classes of monster turn up over and over again, across the world’s folklore. So our more knowledgeable heroes can say, “we have X, Y, and Z – it’s probably something in this group.”

Meaning they’ll at least be swinging in the right ballpark, so to speak.

But it also means certain exposition-heavy scenes will need to get cut up, and/or moved later. And that might actually take a second round of edits, once I have a better idea of what new scenes will be added.

In the meantime, pressing on with more plebian stuff like cutting typos, redundancies, etc.

If all goes well, and I get the cover artist from Net to do a new cover… maybe this fall? I hope!

  1. Yay! Something to save for, I always get your books in hard copy and soft. I love the cover artists, want something during an unexpected power outage, and it’s just that good.

  2. I look forward to reading it, whenever it is ready. All your work is worth waiting for!
I admire that you are definitely an Evil Author, but never a gratuitously cruel one.

  3. I wish you the best of luck on your writing and editing – I admire you for actually having a draft. 🙂 I’m still stuck on the first chapter of mine because I looked over it and realized that hey, that paragraph really belongs over THERE. Also, yay for varieties of supernatural black dogs! 😉

  4. Oh goody! And here I was thinking it probably wouldn’t be out until next summer…

Heh… So I was thinking about the conversation Steven and Aariel have in Net and it occurred to me that Steven is probably asking the wrong question with “How do you destroy Myrrh?”. At least when it comes to getting her off of Earth permanently. He’d probably get a lot more mileage out of asking how to get her lawfully judged in the afterlife given that Myrrh is fundamentally a law-keeper. So long as she’s lawfully judged to go somewhere, she’d more then likely stay there. On the other hand, that comes dangerously close to giving Myrrh something she’s probably been wanting/looking forward to for a very long time and Steven isn’t the kind of person to run that risk. Or at least, that’s probably how Aariel would present it to Steven if asked… he’s the kind of demon who likes having the Useful Loyal Opposition around and from the sound of it, Myrrh has been plenty useful to him in the past. Steven on the other hand… heh…
