Brief NaNo Update: Unexpected Hazards

You can do a lot by subtly tweaking what’s “normal.”

Palm Wasp3

In this case, the local paper wasps have to deal with the problem of finding a big enough sheltered area out of the rain for a whole nest. Looks like there really isn’t one in that area of the backyard. So what did they do? Build three small nests, that fit into the rain-free area sheltered in three separate palm leaves.

So… this just poked the bunnies, about what if the story’s hero runs up against what isn’t quite a normal problem for the setting? Not an insolvable problem, just… odd. 😉

Sounds like a good way of adding a side quest (or the like) without necessarily upping the lethal problems the character might be dealing at the moment. Maybe this Odd Problem is important, it needs to be fixed but people maybe aren’t going to die if you have an immediate solution – long term, yes, but short term, no – so you can afford to brainstorm and/or try something a little unusual to fix it. Experiment.

Or throw a momentary bandage on it until your experiments / research give you something a little more permanent.
