Arachnia’s Child

If spider-averse, you may wish to go no farther.

Spiky orbweaver5

Took me about 20 shots to get a pic even this good. Hello, Gasteracantha cancriformis.

One of the species of spiny-backed orb-weavers, widespread in the southern U.S. It’s like a heavy-metal-punk version of a spider! Or a tiiiiiiiny crab that got Really Lost.

(Spiders and crabs being distantly related, this should not be as surprising as it is.)

  1. Y’know, it looks enough like a crab that it’s not freaking me out at all!
Besides, I am not afraid enough of spiders that pictures of them scare me. Anymore. They have to be alive and in a position where they might touch me! I have come a long way!

      1. Same. I used to be very scared of them though. I had a bad experience with them as a kid. My parents were reading us all The Hobbit when I was somewhere between six and eight. It’s been a long time since I read the book, but as I recall Frodo and the dwarves were in the woods, and were about to be eaten by giant spiders…. when an egg sac hatched in the top corner of the family room’s ceiling, spewing baby spiders everywhere. *shudder*

  2. Ha. For a moment, I thought it was a tiny hermit crab (I have a much bigger one; she loves to climb on everything). That’s amazing! I didn’t know spiders could be spiky. O.O
