Catch a Falling Star 2 Unfinished Ficbit – Living Horus

With a sigh, Daniel subsided.

::That was easy,:: Yugi said, surprised.

Tea drew in a startled breath. “Did you-?”

“He only sleeps,” Yami reassured her. “Although… you are right, aibou. That was too easy.”

“A mortal wears Ra’s mark, and the living Horus is surprised his command is enough?” Bakura scowled into the alcove. “So. Our enemies have enemies.”

“They were here watching those guys?” Tea nodded toward slumped suits.

Smirking, Bakura held up a few plastic-covered cards.

Joey took one, read it over. Blond brows climbed. “Huh.” Reached into the graying man’s shirt collar and came up with a set of rubber-edged metal tags, much like those the blond himself wore. “O’Neill, J., USAF? What’s an Air Force guy doing with an archaeologist?”

“They bear his name?” Yami glanced at him, surprised. “Yours do not.”

“‘Cause they used to be my grandpa’s,” Joey admitted, tucking O’Neill’s tags back into his shirt. “My mom’s dad’s. Something to remember him by, y’know?”

::I didn’t know that,:: Yugi said, surprised.

“Hold on. Are you saying these guys are military?” Tea blurted, wide-eyed. She chafed her arms as if to ward off chill. “Maybe we should just get out of here.”

“Wise,” Bakura said darkly. “Unless the pharaoh objects to undignified flight?”

::Yami,:: Yugi warned.

It’s all right, my own. So long as he aids us, I can tolerate his attempts to goad me. “Strategic retreat,” Yami corrected.

Bakura’s fangs gleamed. “Of course.”

  1. And now they’re going to be linking up with Seto who will then have names to look for.

I suspect the SGC’s and/or the NiD’s firewalls are about to get a stress test.

      1. -Seto doesn’t get stressed. He gives stress-
I don’t know. Constant interaction with the Yugi crew (and Bakura) probably are at least somewhat stressful to him. Not that he would ever admit or show it mind you.

  2. Thanks.

I like this, and as a reader am excited to see where it is building towards. This particular moment is also fun.

Had a good nights sleep. Bit saner for the moment. One of my current cluster bunnies has elements of Railgun and SG1 that I’ve not yet convinced myself to excise. I woke up and decided that the Goa’uld Quetzalcoatl is probably one of my major antagonists.

    1. By “Railgun”, are you talking about the spinoff-series to Index? I’ve been thinking of getting into that, recently.

(And unfortunately, when you say “Quetzalcoatl”, the first thing my mind flashes to is the F/GO version. Dammit, I don’t even like lucha!)

      1. Yeah.

And the FGO version might be one of the more palatable versions to have running around in one’s head. What the bunnies are saying I need to do in order to develop this version is more nightmare fuel than I /can/ really cope with at the moment. (Don’t let that scare you off Index. A lot of my world building assumptions for that project push in horrific directions. And I’m a bit under the weather.)

      2. A Certain Scientific Railgun is great, I kind of like it more than Index itself Biri-Biri (MIsaka) is a fun protagonist, and her interactions with her friends is nice.

Also, it has her side of the Accelerator mess. (I think they mentioned they might eventually do an adaption of Accelerators story and that would be great

      3. … I find myself stumped if that’s better or worse than mine; my brain’s first link up is Quetzalcoatl’s entry in White Wolf’s Scion tabletop RPG, but that’s… Supposed to be as reasonably close as the writer’s can get to an accurate representation.

That’s not the link I feel uncertain about.

The one that stumps me for better or worse is my first thought for Quetzalcoatl when I specifically think ‘Japanese media version/associated’: Which is the version from Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid.

      4. Given I’ve been playing a game where Quetzacoatl plays a part, and is less evil then absolutely convinced he knows what is best for everyone… Well, my mind goes to different places.

Honestly, as Aztec deities go, he’s more acceptable then most of the west, but there’s still a lot of Baldar type editing going on, as there’s a lot of indication that the actual people considered him fairly ineffectual. I would kind of run with that, nice intentions…that mean he doesn’t actually take care of any evil and it’s easy for it to hide from him.

  3. >>“Strategic retreat,” Yami corrected.

“Yes, you’re poking at my ego, I’m going to treat it as teasing, because I know that your ego won’t let you admit to being friends, even to yourself…”

Give the Living Horus a break, Bakura. You know he doesn’t remember a lot. Can’t remember a lot. Given the damage he did to himself . . . it’s probably a minor miracle that Yami remembers ANYTHING at all about Egypt.

Reached into the graying man’s shirt collar and came up with a set of rubber-edged metal tags . . .

Not a lot of point in pretending not to be military if you wear your dog tags.

Okay, some people who aren’t military wear them for various and sundry reasons. Still . . .

“Unless the pharaoh objects to undignified flight?”

The flight will be very dignified, thank you very much.

    “Strategic retreat,” Yami corrected.

Despite Bakura’s goading, Yami isn’t wrong. They are making a strategic retreat.

    1. Plenty of military personnel spend time with civilian friends and st conventions. No, the issue is that Daniel said they worked with him on translations. This probably leads to both of groups suspecting the other as Goa’uld.

      1. Plenty of military personnel spend time with civilian friends and st conventions.

Yes they do but if I’m remember the earlier bits correctly, these particular military personnel are trying to hide the fact, at least for the moment, that they are military personnel.

Hence why the characters are confused – what does the Air Force need with archaeologist / anthropologist / linguist who specialized (I’m guessing) in Ancient Egypt.

This probably leads to both of groups suspecting the other as Goa’uld.

If the YGO thinks about the Gate of the Stars being unsealed. Which they likely will at some point – ’cause Shadow Magicians likely have ways of detecting Jaffa and Gao’uld.

      2. Jack: So… You have another person in your head who switches out control of your body with you?

        Yugi: Well, you’re not wrong…

    2. Give Yami a break? Never! That would be against the whole angry spirit of vengeance schtick. 😉

Jack. I suspect he often just forgets to take them off.

*Nod* Strategic retreat indeed. Yami is capable of retreating. You just don’t see it often.

      1. Jack. I suspect he often just forgets to take them off.

Probably. He has likely worn them so often that they are wearable white noise . . . he doesn’t really notice they are there unless they are pointed out or something else happens to bring them to his attention.

And the people in his life as so used to seeing them or the chain / cord that holds them that they don’t really notice them either – they are part of his shirt.

I’m basing that on the fact that my close friends and family don’t tend to think of my glasses very often – I have worn them for so long that they have simply become part of my face. To the point that my brothers think I look weird and a little unfamiliar without them on.

Yami is capable of retreating. You just don’t see it often.

Yes . . . pretty rare . . . probably because he doesn’t often NEED to retreat. An actual, proper retreat, not a feint that is luring his enemies / opponents into a trap . . .
