Fic fragment – Kotodama part 8

But Ogasawara had been worried about the trip, and more worried about the politics surrounding his superiors and the shogun. And this was Yuki. He trusted her. “Of course I do.”

Yukiatsu’d smiled. “I guess we’re stuck with each other, then.” And brushed his shoulder, right over the family mon, almost casually-

Sending the oath home with the speed of an enchanted bullet.

He… really hadn’t noticed the force of it. Not then. If his blades bit a little deeper, if colors seemed a little brighter in the dark – well, Ogasawara had been ayashi more than a year. He’d been far too accustomed to the surge of magic from youi meat to realize something far more subtle had hooked his soul.

But Michael Doughal had never had magic, and Yukiatsu Ryuudou’s power hit like bottled lightning.

The Ancient Pact.

That was what Genbatsu had told them both later. Maigo and human. Magic and mortality. Yukiatsu and his own words had bound them more tightly than iron chains. And she hadn’t even known she was doing it-

I’m not Ogasawara!

Magic was like the youi. It didn’t listen to anything as human as logic. It poked him, prodded him, tested him-

Curled about him like a satisfied cat, and sank into his bones.

I’m Lieutenant Michael Doughal, U.S. Army. Serial number-

The weight of daisho at his side, the sturdy black cloth in his hands, said otherwise.

Yukiatsu’s haori.

A match to his own. A deliberate match; Yukiatsu had made the pair of them, not long after that accidental pledge. For a moment he saw it as civilians saw it; plain black, sober linen, the white Ogasawara cedar tree mon. Good quality, but nothing to impress high lords-

And the magic within him breathed as he breathed; linen shifting into silken moon-shadows and whispers, scarthistle fluff and the darkness before dawn. Ogasawara’s mon glimmered like the first rays of morning; aside from that, eyes slipped away from dark folds.

“Just wear it and stop grumbling,” Yukiatsu had said gruffly. “Too many damn things try to eat you, Chief. Let’s make that a little harder.”

  1. Have some Exact Words, boss! So nice to see you, wonder what happens when you hook in with Yuki/Rachel? In other words, gleefully anticipating mayhem.

  2. Sorry dude but what normal life you had is officially over. And you might find your one of oaths (which does include protecting the citizens of this country) a little easier to accomplish in this world now . . . of course, it also complicates it because nothing is free.

At least you are the only one whose life, body, and such have been hijacked?

      1. There is that.

As Ja’far would testify, being able to do a serious round of monster hunting can be very therapeutic after dealing with all these more irritating than Sinbad people (because Sinbad is crazy not stupid, unlike these morons) that you aren’t allowed to stab.

Side note, they might need to find something or someone he’s allowed to kill soon. Or Balbadd might end up short a few idiots. Not a big loss but still . . . .

      2. I now have this mental picture of Teenage Girl!Sinbad circa Adventures of Sinbad running around in Hallow Earth ‘verse. Complete with all Eight Generals (themed costume party; they could get away with it!) AND all seven Djinn. There’s a massive hope spot for you.

Bonus insanity: Alibaba, Morgiana, and Aladdin at //the same themed costume party//.

        Monster(s): Rawr!
Drakon, Masure, Hinahoho, and Morgiana: *unimpressed glares*
        Monster(s): Run away!

      3. If I had any more of an idea beyond that mental image, I might be tempted to write it. But all the bunnies are giving me right now is “themed costume party, explosions, mass chaos, and a lot more survivors than you’d think due to an overabundance of badass. Also Tony Stark. Because Chaos.”

      4. Teen!Sinbad after working with Aladdin to make a new island chain in the middle of nowhere: “I declare this land New Sinbali! New Balidra? Oh, what the hell. Its habitable, home, and no one’s getting chewed on. Let’s party!”

Tony Stark: “How the hell did she…? We’re in the middle of goddamn no where and there’s //islands// now what the f–! Note to self: Invent an auto distillery to create enough booze to make Cap drunk, stat.”

Shakkaran: *pets cobra; nods sympathetically* “Some days, booze is the only way to survive her.”

      5. Sinbad and Generals plus Alibaba and Followers + Associated Djinn + along with the people who decided to dress as them in the Halloween World . . . my bunnies are very intrigued by this idea. Because that world in some serious need of hope and that is what our cute, deadly little Kings and their companions do best (besides kill monsters and cause mass destruction and immense chaos).

      6. My bunnies have decided that the element most lacking in on screen remediation is the world food supply.

They’ve been very insistent that a) Norman Borlaug was alive in 1997 b) there are possible fantasy cognates to Norman Borlaug c) Farming is a very valuable skillset, but there will be a transition time to the new conditions and staples d) transportation and manufacturing are also broke e) If canon has heavily abused the effects of Halloween on shipping and uniforms, I haven’t seen it.

New land means that land monsters have to be imported. Which means relatively secure docking. Someone establishing a Most Serene Republic in some uninhabited and strategic location? Do want.

  3. >>If he ends up an alternate Stark with Jarvis as his Djinn, Tony will be very annoyed. Magic!

    No, quantum physics!
