A Different Kind of Door – Standing Watch

Deep breaths, Riku told himself, hood pulled low as he leaned against the wall outside the infirmary doors. Kairi believes in you. Hollow Bastion’s willing to risk taking you in if this doesn’t work out. And Sora’s counting on you. You can do this. You have to.

Right. All he had to do was face down Tok’ra – way older Tok’ra – allied with DiZ. And the Tau’ri who were those Tok’ras’ allies – promises of safety or not.

Oh, I want to throw up…. Here they come. Focus.

“Still in one piece, I see,” DiZ nodded, not slowing.

So much for the subtle approach. Deliberately, Riku moved between DiZ and the door.

The blond’s amber eyes narrowed. “We don’t have time for games, young man-”

“Riku, is it?” The balding Tok’ra held out a hand, Tau’ri style. “Jacob Carter. I hear you helped get my daughter back.”

Adrenaline drained away as if someone had pulled out a plug; tunnel vision faded, enough that Riku could see SG-1’s friendly faces behind the Tok’ra. He knows them. Maybe this’ll be okay… don’t faint. Breathe. Letting his hood fall back, Riku shook Jacob’s hand.

The Tok’ra started at the silver hair. Riku bit back the urge to stick his tongue out at the older man. You’d think a Tok’ra would have seen enough weird in the universe not to freak out. Though to be fair, just about every world’s people flinched, seeing silver hair around a young face.

Well, every world except Hollow Bastion. They had bigger problems.

For a moment Riku pictured Leon staring down DiZ, gunblade ready to strike, dark hair frosted with white as he called on Shiva’s ice. And hid a grin.

Better hope that never happens, idiot, his better sense pointed out. Tok’ra wouldn’t be nearly as ready to leave that mess alone as Merlin and Aeris are. And while Leon might be able to handle that kind of nasty surprise, maybe – Cloud was still dangerously iffy. He’d been better for a while, after Sora had gotten him out of that contract with Hades, but when Sora had disappeared….

Damn it, Cloud. It’s not your fault he went chasing after me and got caught!

  1. Nice job, Jacob! Way to put the kid at ease enough *not* to go immediate attack mode. Yeah, RIku, don’t faint, you NEED to stay awake right now.

And just because they’re allied with the Tok’ra, don’t bet on the Tau’ri giving you over without a serious fight. With some sneakiness thrown in on Jack’s part for sure – can’t give someone what you don’t have, after all. 😉

  2. Oh dear, poor Cloud. The implications are not nice.

Riku, don’t worry about it. Jack and Danial wouldn’t let anything happen if it’s within their power to resist.

And even if it isn’t, because Tau’ri are like that…

    1. SG-1 has mastered the Tao of “better forgiveness than permission”.

*General Hammond* has mastered the Tao of “keeping SG-1 out of court martial for stunts that *really should have* landed them in seriously hot water”. Also the Tao of “I’m the only one that can keep these maniacs *somewhat* under control and keep them delivering results, so you need to let me wrangle them *my* way unless *you* want the job.”

      1. But is he? He’s rescued Sam “I Blew Up A Sun” Carter and helped get her back in the driver’s seat.

Or is this before that happened?

Either way Sam’s a lot scarier than Larxene in everything but the “in your face, spilling your guts” way. And even then I suspect it wouldn’t be that way if Sam had enough time to figure out “magic.”

…actually thinking about it, Daniel probably IS the least dangerous member of SG1. And he’s not exactly “mostly harmless.”

      2. I don’t know, Daniel is the guy that can make perfect strangers who don’t really like him into friends/allies that would kill for him. He could make you wish you were dead.

      3. Teal’c, Jack, and Sam are the obvious big threats. But if you make Daniel hate you and then escape into your terrified compliant population, within 6 months you will wonder how the rebels managed to win and kill you. He knows how people work, both on his side, and his enemies.
