Bridge ficbit – First Monster

The pickles were delicious.

So Yuzu has magic as well. Deliberately ignoring the view of the street from clinic windows – Isshin had moved his bed with screech of metal and a sheepish grumble about oncoming rain, and indeed the skies felt gray and storm-heavy – Loki used a dab of rice to soak up juices for one last bite. Two of three, and Yuzu claims Karin sees… I’d be surprised if the girl is without power.

Yuzu’s magic was a much quieter thing than her brother’s. Not seidr, no; and yet… it reminded him of Frigga. Warm, safe, and restful as a seat by the hearth. He felt the sparks of her unpracticed will infused into the meal; a wish for warmth, and protection, and we have to stay together.

Do not cross the little blonde, Loki noted to himself. Subtle magics could be the most dangerous. Isshin might have invited him to stay, but if Yuzu thought he was a threat to her broken family-

Well. Her power was already in him. It wouldn’t take much to shred him apart.

And you ate it anyway. Are you that foolish, or do you really have a death wish?

Probably both. Of all he’d left behind – burned behind him – Frigga had never done him harm. He didn’t want to hurt Yuzu. He was under her roof; how could he refuse her hospitality?

Still, the fact remained: like Mjolnir, a heartbroken half-human girl’s cooking was one of the few things he’d never warded himself against. It might actually be able to kill him. And oh, there was a bitter comfort there-

An odd clinking reached his ears. Not quite metal on metal. Yet not anything else he’d ever heard.

“Oh, woe is me….”

Loki blinked. Rubbed his eyes, and stared out glass windows into the street, as all the hairs on the back of his neck stood up.

So that’s why Ichigo can’t tell the difference.

It looked like an ordinary, glum middle-aged businessman shuffling down the sidewalk. Solid. Mundane. Not a trace of spectral translucence about him.

But that’s a spirit. I can feel it.

He’d tracked down enough wandering souls in his study of sorcery to know. Not to mention the small detail of humans not floating inches above the ground as they walked. Or the odd, broken chain, dangling from the center of the ghost’s chest.

Right above the heart… wait a moment. Isshin said Hollows were ghosts who lost their hearts-

Orange, moving past the window.

Ichigo. Damn it, no sense of self-preservation at all….

Or perhaps there was, finally. The boy was hesitating by the window, bandaged fingers clenching. Obviously he wanted to head toward that slump of ghostly misery and tell it everything would be okay. Just as obviously, he was terrified of getting anywhere near it.

Good. Fear can keep you alive. “Ichigo! Come away from there.”

No reaction from the boy. Either he was ignoring a sane almost-adult voice, as children often did-

Or he just can’t hear me, Loki realized, listening to how much he couldn’t hear from the street. The spirit’s lament wasn’t physical; glass did nothing to mute it. His own voice? Not so fortunate.

Damn. Get out of this bed… oh, that’s not a good idea at all….

He must have blanked out for a minute, bare feet on the floor and hands clenched desperately on the side of the bed to keep him from toppling over. When his vision flickered back in, Ichigo was almost at the side of the rain-wet road. Looking at the ghost. Who seemed to be slowly realizing that Ichigo could see him; doleful lamentations had died to a stunned mutter, as the ghost’s jaw dropped-

Then the ghost jumped like he’d been hit with Lady Darcy’s taser, as something shivered through the air.

Was that a howl?

If it was, any self-respecting wolf would be cowering in its den out of sheer good sense. This was a howl that would have made Garm sit up and take notice, bones of the dead forgotten. A chilling, spine-shivering sound that wasn’t a sound, that pierced glass and ears as if they weren’t there, dragging talons over the chalkboard of his soul.

“Karin! Yuzu!” Isshin’s tone buried even the possibility of arguing. “Go to Loki. Now! Ichigo, where’s – damn it!”

  1. Wow. It would be kind of interesting if what got Loki in the end was Yuzu’s cooking. Sad, but interesting.
And was that the tiniest flicker of *common sense* from Ichigo? Will wonders never cease? Although Isshin no doubt wishes it was more than a flicker, given that Ichigo has either run a) to help that elderly ghost or b)smack into the Hollow but it’s a start! The boy can learn!

      1. And Hel’s Hall will thaw out…

        *grabs raft in eager anticipation*

Ichigo has always struck me as a first responder. “Good” first responder is up to debate. He’s great in emergency situations. Hell on long term strategy. Also hell on rational thinking due to the shear refusal to acknowledge such a mundane thing as /limitations/.

Might be why my bunnies keep trying to nibble on his ankles despite (or in spite of?) the fact I washed out of Bleach around the trainwreck that was the first trip to Soul Society. All Ichigo has to do is be there and things explode!

      2. The thing with Idiot Heroes is they make your plotting a lot simpler. “See bad guy, smash bad guy!” If you have intelligent heroes, then you have to come up with something more creative. *G*

And yes, give the guy strategy lessons. Heck, get him to play Elder Tales, or something – so he can learn what tanks are supposed to do besides just draw fire!

  2. Did something happen that I don’t know about? why did you stop feeding my addiction of river of stars I’m in abstinens now and slowly wasting away

    1. Two things. 1) I’m in the final edits on Taka, and doing nitpicky edits flattens the creative impulse like a steamroller.

      2) I’m at the point where I need to review what happened in Gaiden to get the next bit of River right. And the week has been too hectic to do that. (Insert swearing at various RL bits here.)

I really, really wish Gaiden were out in print. Then I could read it away from the computer. Computers are for work, drat it!

      1. Tablets- computer read elsewhere. (Honestly, I agree. I don’t like reading manga online. I’ll do it, of course, but it’s not my favorite.)

        Read/watch Gaiden. Cry.
        Re-read/watch Gaiden. Still cry.

      2. And then you poof for a bit while your fandom wonders where you are, and bunnies overrun because easily portable multiple books! and Non-computer readings! Stuff! Things! Shinies!

  3. I like Yuzu’s magic influencing the household. I like that a LOT. Headcanon accepted (if it’s not canon. I dunno. I stopped after Ichigo vs Aizen. *shrug*)

    Ichigo! Avoid the ghostie!
(I just remembered that in the anime, at least one ghost followed Ichigo INSIDE OF HIS HOUSE. *whimpers* But threashold!)

Coming up soon: Loki, THIS is a monster.
Loki: *very determinedly Does Not Eep.*

Followed by: Loki: “These Midgardians are /INSANE./

More like there’s something in the water of Karakura. Even discounting Isshin and the rogue Shinigami (and that’s a lot to discount) there is plenty of weird s**t. I mean the place is practically ghost/hollow central.

      1. Puns are good, /bad/ puns are better.

(Honestly, as soon as I remembered the ghost in the anime, I thought you would have thrown things while seeing it and figured out REASONS. Because you tend to make universes make sense. Odd sense, sometimes to incorporate canon, but sense.)

    2. In this ‘verse, the kids have Affinities. (Like Loki does for chaos and trouble.) Yuzu’s is household and hearth. Karin’s is secrets. Ichigo… literally has an affinity for “save people in trouble”.

And yes. Loki will shortly find out that not only are these Midgardians not afraid of him, they make bad puns under fire.

…Obviously, Frigga sent him to the right place. 😉

Sado’s would probably be filed under ‘Mountain’s strength’ or something like that. I mean the guy blocked an I-beam falling from what, two maybe three stories up? And not only did he survive, the bloody beam BENT on impact with his shoulders. This was before guy he even awoken to his powers in the hollow invasion. Whatever power he had was in its weakest, most passive state.

Loki is probably going to be wondering if the boy has jotun or aesir blood because magic or not, that is not something mortals are normally capable of pulling off.

Though speaking of mystic heritages, considering that in this ‘verse most myths are ultimately based on real things one has to draw parallels between the frost giants and the Yuki-onna stories of Japan. Who knows, maybe Loki wasn’t the only child of ice and frost to be abandoned.

  4. Oh Ichigo . . . always rushing in where angels fear to tread . . . well, if you name your son one who protects, you probably should expect him to have a saving people thing. As Loki could tell you and you ought, Isshin, is that names have power. Especially when they are Names.

Loki will probably have deja vu after he calms down or flashbacks to various “Thor, don’t -!” *crash, chaos, headache* “Damnit!” moments. Probably will cement his determination to get Ichigo to look before he leaps. Because he is not going spend all his time fishing another utterly impulsive idiot out of trouble he constantly lands himself in by always acting without thinking. Not again.

Also Since he’s already awake and trying to reach his shinigami, Zangetsu is probably pitching a fit inside their inner world. “Partner, could you at least wait until you can hear my name before you rush into deadly danger? So we can face together it like we’re supposed to?”

    1. Names definitely had Power in this ‘verse.

At least Loki recognizes that Ichigo’s not trying to show off. Well, not until he ends up partnering with a vicious shrimp of a Shinigami, at least….

And yes. Zangetsu is equal flavors of “Argh!” and, “Well, if we survive, this will be interesting….”

  5. I appreciate that Loki’s reaction to Ichigo and Karin is ‘damn that is/will be a lot of power’, but that Yuzu’s the one he files under ‘immediate threat/danger’. Always fond of Beware the Nice Ones.
